Transplanted hair can grow long term. However, loss of non-transplanted hair may continue and change the appearance of your hair. The plan must take this evolution into account.

It depends on the result of the first operation, hair loss progression, and donor reserve. The timing is decided after evaluation; do not plan another transplant before sufficiently assessing the previous result.

You arrive in the morning to complete your paperwork. The team draws the planned hairline or treatment outline, which you approve before proceeding. Local anesthesia is followed by graft extraction. The grafts are organized and kept cool in an appropriate preservation solution.

After extraction, you have about an hour to rest and enjoy a hot meal ordered for you. Implantation follows, usually while you lie on your back. You can watch TV or use your phone, covered with protective film according to the center’s hygiene procedures.

Snack and bathroom breaks are available. Let the team know when you need a break; an assistant accompanies you to the bathroom. The schedule takes the procedure and your comfort into account.

The procedure is done under local anesthesia. The injections can be uncomfortable, and sensitivity or tightness may occur after the session. Significant or worsening pain must be reported immediately.

Yes. Follicular extraction leaves small punctiform scars, even though there is no linear strip scar. Their visibility varies depending on healing, extraction, and hair length.

Swelling, crusts, sensitivity, or redness may occur. There are also risks of bleeding, infection, visible scarring, or insufficient results. Individual risks must be explained during the consultation.

At NOVA, these are the time guidelines for one transplant day:

• 500–1,000 grafts: up to 6 hours.
• More than 1,000 and up to 2,000 grafts: up to 8 hours.
• More than 2,000 and up to 3,000 grafts: up to 10 hours maximum.

These are approximate guidelines, not a guaranteed duration. The procedure and breaks needed for your comfort may affect the schedule.

For straight and wavy hair, allow one day for up to 3,000 grafts and two days above that. For Afro and tightly curled hair, allow one day for up to 2,000 grafts and two days above that. For a two-day procedure, the time guidelines apply to the grafts planned for each day; the team confirms the allocation and schedule.

For illustration only, if the grafts are split equally:

• 3,500 grafts: 1,750 per day, up to 8 hours each day.

Follow the personalized instructions given after the transplant, especially for washing, sleeping, and protecting treated areas. Do not scratch crusts or apply products without advice. Refer to the post-transplant guide.

Redness may appear and its duration varies. If it intensifies or is accompanied by increasing pain, fever, or discharge, contact the center or a healthcare professional promptly.

The timing depends on your job, physical exertion, and exposure to heat or dust. A rest period may be necessary. Have the appropriate timing for your activity specified before the procedure.

A temporary shedding of shafts may occur in the weeks following the transplant. This alone does not indicate follicle loss. Progress is monitored during follow-up.

Regrowth is gradual over several months. Results may continue to evolve up to 12 to 18 months depending on the person and regions. The time frames shown in our before/after correspond to photo dates, not a guarantee of results.

We provide follow-up for 12 months after your transplant. For a question about your follow-up at NOVA, contact our team. If your procedure was performed at another center, contact the team that treated you.

At NOVA, wait until the first ten days after your final transplant day have passed before wearing a cap or hat: from day 11, choose a loose-fitting one that does not rub the treated areas. Wait three weeks before wearing a beanie or helmet. Keep items clean and dry, especially after sweating: follow their cleaning instructions and let them dry fully. Do not modify a helmet’s safety components. If an item presses on an area that is still sensitive or has not healed, ask for advice before wearing it.

Do not scratch the treated areas or pick scabs. At NOVA, refrigerated La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water spray helps soothe itching in the donor and transplanted areas, without touching the skin with the nozzle. On the procedure day, follow the hourly spraying schedule until bedtime, then 4 to 6 times a day for the following six days. If itching continues afterward, spray whenever it occurs to help soothe it. Do not pop bumps. Contact the team promptly if discomfort worsens or comes with pain, increasing redness, fever, or discharge.

At NOVA, we recommend allowing 7 to 10 days before flying after your hair transplant. Slower recovery, significant swelling, or unusual symptoms may require postponing departure. Plan your journey so you can continue aftercare and avoid friction or impact on treated areas.

Plan my trip

It may be considered in certain situations after identifying the cause of hair loss. Diffuse loss alone is insufficient for indication: the quality of the donor area and stability of the situation must be evaluated. See female hair transplant.

Shaving depends on the technique and the plan. Partial shaving of the donor area may sometimes be proposed; its discreteness depends on the length and density of surrounding hair. Modalities are discussed before the procedure.

This may be considered for some thinning areas. The distribution is planned to take into account existing hairs, the possibilities of the donor area and the expected progression of hair loss.

The hairline, hair direction, and distribution are planned to achieve a harmonious result. The outcome depends on many factors and cannot be guaranteed as undetectable.

It may be considered after examination of the hair and donor area. Follicle curvature must be taken into account; not every patient is automatically a candidate.
