Flying after a hair transplant

Do you need to return home or travel after a transplant? Plan your trip with your team before booking. The goal is to protect grafts, continue care, and be able to consult if necessary.

When can one fly again?

Departure depends on your recovery, the procedure details, and the planned journey. A short flight with a direct route is not arranged the same way as a long-haul with multiple connections.

The NHS recommends particular care for graft protection during the first two weeks. This concerns protecting them post-operation; it is not a ban on flying for exactly fourteen days. Read the NHS recovery tips.

Why avoid rushing your return?

After harvesting in the donor area and implantation, the scalp heals. Travel mainly adds practical constraints during this recovery period.

Protect the grafts

Friction, involuntary movements, and shocks from luggage or equipment should be avoided.

Travel comfortably

A sensitive scalp or swelling can make waiting and the journey more uncomfortable.

Maintain care

Connections and schedules should not prevent following the protocol given after the procedure.

During the trip, maintain good practices

Follow your team's instructions: do not scratch grafts, avoid friction, and do not add products not recommended. Rest, sleeping position, and resuming activities must remain according to the received protocol.

At NOVA, wait until the first ten days after your final transplant day have passed before wearing a cap or hat: from day 11, choose a loose-fitting one that does not rub the treated areas. Wait three weeks before wearing a beanie or helmet. Keep items clean and dry, especially after sweating: follow their cleaning instructions and let them dry fully. Do not modify a helmet’s safety components. If an item presses on an area that is still sensitive or has not healed, ask for advice before wearing it. Also arrange baggage handling if it requires effort that is not advised.
