Finasteride 1 mg: What Changed in France
In 2026, the ANSM strengthened the prescription and dispensing conditions for oral finasteride 1 mg. This is not a general ban on the drug.
To Start Treatment
An annual shared information certificate, signed by doctor and patient, is required in addition to the prescription.
For All Dispensing
The obligation also applies to renewals. The certificate, valid for one year, must be presented to the pharmacist with the prescription.

Two Targets, the Same Follicle
The first mechanism concerns DHT formation; the second, the hair cycle. This module explains their difference without constituting a recommendation to combine.
Finasteride
Part is transformed into DHT by 5α-reductase.
Hormonal influence on sensitive follicles decreases.
The goal is to slow the progressive thinning of hair, with variable response.
It reduces DHT synthesis; it does not directly block androgen receptors. NOVA neither recommends nor prescribes this drug.
Topical Minoxidil
Its action does not rely on reducing DHT.
Anagen Growth
Hair forms and lengthens. Minoxidil promotes and may prolong this phase.
Catagen Transition
Follicle activity slows: it enters a short regression phase.
Telogen Rest
A resting phase precedes renewal. Minoxidil promotes return to anagen.

What Studies Observe
A comparative trial in men with androgenetic alopecia observed a more frequent response with combination than with a single treatment.

Forms Are Not Interchangeable
Local Minoxidil
Solution or foam: indications, concentrations, and precautions depend on the product. The pharmacist or dermatologist verifies the suitable form.
Oral Route and Combined Preparations
Oral minoxidil for hair is off-label in France and requires specific medical supervision. Combined preparations do not freely substitute separate medications.
Availability of a product online does not guarantee authorization, quality, or suitability. Do not combine several products without checking active ingredients with a professional.
Effects to Know, Signs to Report
Finasteride
Libido, erection, ejaculation, and mood disorders are reported. Some effects may persist after stopping. Any symptom should be discussed with the prescriber.
Topical Minoxidil
Irritation, itching, and unwanted hair growth are possible. Chest pain, palpitations, malaise, or swelling require prompt medical advice.
Outside these alert situations, do not modify treatment alone: contact your managing physician. Each product’s leaflet remains the reference for contraindications.
Assess Over Time, Without Rushing Decisions
Before Any Treatment
Identify cause of loss, note history, and take comparable photos. Sudden, patchy, or painful loss requires consultation.
During The First Months
Transient loss may accompany starting minoxidil. If significant, persistent, or symptomatic, seek advice. Do not increase quantity to speed results.
During Assessments
The dermatologist assesses tolerance and evolution over months. Stabilizing loss may already be beneficial even without significant regrowth. Gains may lessen after stopping.
And Around a Hair Transplant?
The transplant redistributes follicles from the donor area ; it does not necessarily stop loss of non-transplanted hair. The surgical plan and dermatological follow-up complement each other.

No. Our center does not prescribe or renew finasteride. Contact your dermatologist or prescribing physician, especially for new information obligations.
Is finasteride banned in France?
No: prescription and dispensing conditions for oral finasteride 1 mg were strengthened in 2026. NOVA’s decision not to recommend or prescribe is distinct from these regulations.
Is minoxidil suitable for all hair loss?
No. It does not replace cause investigation. Indications depend on product, sex, age, and history, especially cardiovascular.
Precautions for Women?
Dermatological consultation is necessary. Finasteride 1 mg is not indicated for women and poses a risk to male fetuses: pregnant or potentially pregnant women must not handle crushed or broken tablets. Minoxidil indications vary by product; pregnancy and breastfeeding require medical advice.
