The Curly or afro hair transplant requires specific expertise. The curvature of the follicle under the skin can make extraction more delicate. At NOVA Capillaire in Paris, the approach is personalized to preserve grafts, respect natural hair orientation and seek a harmonious result.
Why do curly hairs require special expertise?
The visible hair shape does not always exactly describe its route under the skin. The follicle can be curved: the instrument and extraction gesture must consider this to limit the risk of injury.
Preparation combines a precise assessment of the donor area, suitable tools, meticulous extraction, and implantation that respects the natural hair angle. The desired density depends on your hair and the available donor supply.
Coily, wavy, or straight: what’s different beneath the skin?
Hair texture can be associated with differences in the curve of the follicle beneath the skin. These three simplified illustrations show how they can differ.

Coily
The follicle can have a pronounced curve, which needs to be considered during extraction.

Wavy
The curve varies: the way hair looks above the skin does not reveal the full shape of the follicle.

Straight
A generally straighter path, to be evaluated individually.
These diagrams are general illustrations. Your own hair is assessed when planning your transplant.
Sapphire FUE: NOVA's choice for afro hair
Our team favors Sapphire FUE. The follicular units are harvested one by one from the donor area. The recipient sites are then prepared with sapphire blades before the grafts are placed.

Preserving the graft
Extraction must follow the follicle's trajectory as closely as possible. The precision of this step remains essential, regardless of the tool later used for implantation.
Respecting texture
Direction, depth, and distribution are adapted to the hairline and the areas to be thickened, to seek a result consistent with your hair.
And the Choi Pen?
The implant pen can be used in some cases. For NOVA, loading curved grafts and adapting their size to the needle require particular care. Our preference for pre-prepared recipient sites is part of our practice; the choice must remain adapted to the patient and team's experience.
How is management conducted?
The personalized assessment
Hair loss, history, density, donor area and expectations: the exam allows confirming indication and preparing a realistic number of grafts.
Extraction
The grafts are harvested from the back or sides of the scalp, taking into account their curvature and preservation of the donor area.
Implantation
Follicular units are distributed in the areas to treat. Angle and orientation are prepared to respect texture and hairline design.
Regrowth and before/after results
Small scabs usually appear after the procedure. Temporary shedding of implanted hairs may occur in the first weeks, before progressive regrowth over months.
Changes become visible gradually; the result should not be considered definitive at six months. Maturation can continue up to 12 to 18 months depending on the case. The photos below show individual journeys, without guaranteeing identical results.
Post-procedure course, simply
The first days
Small scabs, scalp sensitivity, or swelling of the forehead and eyelids may occur. Follow washing and protection instructions given by the team.
Long-term follow-up
Decreased sensitivity may persist for several weeks, sometimes longer. Small bumps or cysts may also appear and should be reported to the center.
Who can benefit from a transplant?
A transplant can be considered to correct a hairline or densify a thinning area when the cause of loss, scalp condition and donor area allow it. It redistributes the available follicles; it does not treat every cause of hair loss.
Scarring history and scalp conditions must be discussed during assessment. Eczema, psoriasis or dermatitis require evaluation and adapted care before deciding on a procedure.
Price of a curly and afro hair transplant
Price depends on number of grafts, area to cover, donor reserve, and extraction complexity. Find common packages on our website below; assessment establishes a personalized estimate.
